Umrah

What is Umrah

In Arabic, the word Umrah is derived from I'timaar which means a visit. However, Umrah in islamic terminology, means paying a visit to Kaaba, performing tawaaf (circumambulation) around it, walking between safaa and Marwah seven times. A Performer of Umrah puts off his Ihram by having his hair shaved or cut. Umrah can be  performed along with hajj and in other days as well.
In Islam Umrah is known to be the "minor Hajj" and is a Sunnah act performed at any time of the year except for the five days of Hajj, in which it is makrooh, or disliked, to perform Umrah. One who steps out in the path of Umrah is considered a pilgrim until he reaches back home.
The act of Umrah is known to cleanse one 's soul from past committed sins from the last time one performed umrah.performing umrah , protects the one from poverty sinse they are there solely for the sake of allah spending their wealth and time in completing the dead. Like hajj, umrah is one of the best deeds attain the love and pleasure of allah. Performing umrah during the blessed month of Ramadan equals to performing hajj.  Another great virtue of umrah is that if one passes away in the journey of umrah the reward for them is Jannah.

Procedure of Umrah

Four primary steps of umrah-

There are 4 primary steps of Umrah:

1- Ihram: Enter into Ihram by washing your body and wearing Ihram and declare the intention to make the pilgrimage.

Prohibitions of Ihram

  • Cutting Nails
  • Haircutting Or removing extra hair from any part of the body.
  • Use of any scents on the body or on the robes.
  • Stitched Clothing.
  • Sandals and flip flops must not be stitched either and should allow the ankle and back of the foot to be exposed.
  • Covering Face or Head.
  • Hunting of animals even of lice.
  • Sexual activity

2- Tawaf: Enter Al Masjid Al Haram (Holy Mosque) and perform Tawaf - circling the Kaaba seven times in a counterclockwise direction. Tawaf means moving around Kabah seven times with respect and devotion. The pilgrims must walk keeping Kabah on their left. Upon arriving at the Kaabah, stop reciting the Talbiyyah. You must be in Wudu (ablution). Men to leave their right shoulder bare ONLY during the entire Tawaf, this is called Idtiba’a, after the tawaf men need to cover both shoulders.

3- Sa'i: Perform Sa'i - walking 7 times between the hills of Safa and Marwah beside the Kaaba.

4- Taqseer: At the end of the Umrah, men exit from Ihram by shaving their head.  Completing Umrah for women requires cutting off a short lock of hair.

Difference between hajj and Umrah-

  • Both are Islamic pilgrimages, the main difference is their level of importance and the method of observance.
  •  Hajj is one of the five pillars of Islam.  It is obligatory for every Muslim once in their lifetime, provided they are physically fit and financially capable.
  •  Hajj is performed over specific days during a designated Islamic month.  However, Umrah can be performed at any time.
  •  Although they share common rites, Umrah can be performed in less than a few hours while Hajj is more time-consuming, and involves more rituals

Umrah is sometimes considered the "lesser pilgrimage", in that it is not compulsory, but is still highly recommended.  It is generally able to be completed in a few hours, in comparison to Ḥajj, which may take a few days.  It is also not meant to be interpreted as a substitute for Hajj.  However, both are demonstrations of the solidarity of the Muslim people, and their submission to Allah.
